Onion Garlic Lentils PDF Print E-mail

Lentils are a staple in Indian cuisine. This recipe spices them up with flavors from the onions and garlic. Serve these onion garlic lentils hot with plain rice, papadums and spicy pork.


Ingredients

* 2 C. red lentils, soaked in cold water for 20 minutes
* 4 1/2 C. water
* 1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
* 3 Tbs. oil
* salt
* 1 Tbs. black mustard seeds
* 2 tsp. cumin seeds
* 1 onion, finely chopped
* 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
* 1/2 tsp. chili powder

Directions

Boil the lentils in the water with the turmeric and salt for about 20 minutes until tender. Heat the oil and fry the mustard and cumin seeds until the seeds start crackling. Add the onion and garlic and fry until browned. Add the chili powder and stir for 30 seconds. Pour over the lentils, stir well, cover and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
